There was a consensus in the discussion the overall strategy for Ansible support is to provide a complete playbook structured around roles and variables. The user’s main task would be to fill in variable values, ideally through a future Cockpit configuration editor.

WG agreed to start with a minimal set of pre-installed applications. The initial offerings should be limited to software available in the official Fedora repositories.

Brett, Jocelyn and MatH will put together a proposal for the initial small set of apps from the current ideas and proposals.

Agreed: We keep the home server spin-off tickets integrated with our main ticket repository.

Agreed: WG agrees about the home server goals as specified in ticket 197.

Conan Kudo will fix Kiwi to set the right partition type of Linux LVM for the system partition on KVM guest and arm image. The gap issue should be discused with the ARM SIG.

The working group is generally content with the F44 testing cycle. Two outstanding issues were discussed and to be continued next meeting:

The working group reached a consensus on the goals and objectives for providing Ansible support, as documented in the project wiki. We decided to create a proof-of-concept playbook based on the existing post-installation tasks found in the Fedora Server documentation.

We agreed that the initial focus for a new "Beginner’s Guide" should be on home server / homelab users. The next step is to create a formal proposal outlining the guide’s goals and a potential table of contents.

Media installation tests for the F44 Beta were completed successfully. Emmanuel Seyman confirmed that PostgreSQL and MariaDB work correctly on F44.

The timeshift tool is being abandoned as a potential solution because it is too tightly coupled to GNOME technologies and lacks maintainers. WE are looking for a disaster-recovery solution that can snapshot /usr before an update, using LVM snapshots. The focus is on finding a suitable UI for this process.

A proposal was discussed to use Btrfs instead of LVM for this spin-off to make administration easier for home users. However, this would mean deviating from a key feature of the Fedora Server Edition. Other ideas for the spin-off include pre-installing all Cockpit plugins and packaging a user-friendly backup solution like urbackup.

All planned release testing for Fedora Server 44 is complete with no major issues found.

AGREED: The working group agreed that the Server F44 installation media are ready for release.

The work on LocalKDC is ongoing upstream, with the goal of having basic support in Fedora 45. This feature will enable use cases like accessing NFS shares upon SSH login using Kerberos tickets.

Testing can begin now using a COPR repository against FreeIPA and Active Directory environments.

A new project to create a "Beginner’s Guide to Server" was proposed. It aims to help new users understand what to do after a fresh installation lands them at a command prompt.

Successful tests were reported for single-disk BIOS and UEFI installations, BIOS RAID installation, KVM virtualization, and functionality of PostgreSQL and MariaDB.

UEFI RAID and aarch64 SBC installation tests are still pending.

Jocelyn has been going through our docs and making sure that they still apply to F44 and has been updating them as they go. Starting early we should achieve a better covering this release.

We organized testing tasks for the F44 Beta release. With regard to the KVM image, particular attention should be paid to that the root filesystem is LVM and there are no partition gaps. Results should be recorded in both ticket #186 and the test matrix.

AGREED: We will develop issue templates for various purposes as well as a template chooser.

AGREED: The discussion about the project goals was postponed to allow time to study the proposal in the wiki and discuss it asynchronously on Matrix.

The use of BTRFS for the spin-off was discussed (pros: easier for home users, and cons: potential database performance issues, deviation from the main server edition).

Several members, including pboy and eseyman, will will be attending FOSDEM. A Fedora/Fedora Docs meeting is planned for the Friday evening of the event.

We finally agreed to create a home server/home lab spin-off. Other new projects include pxe boot support and backup/rescue system. Details are still being discussed.
