How to Join

Whether you are a seasoned designer or just starting out, there is a place for you here. We welcome contributors of all skill levels and backgrounds.

What You Need

There are no strict prerequisites to join the team. Some tasks are straightforward and well-documented, making them ideal for beginners, while others require more design experience or familiarity with specific tools. You do not need to be an expert to get started and the team is happy to help you learn along the way.

What helps most is a willingness to learn, communicate openly, and work with open source tools. See Tools We Use for more on the software we use and why.

Getting Started

  1. Create a Fedora Account. Sign up for a Fedora Account if you do not already have one. You will need this to contribute to Fedora projects.

  2. Join the Fedora Design chat. The team communicates through the #design:fedoraproject.org room on chat.fedoraproject.org. This is where most day-to-day conversation happens.

  3. Introduce yourself. Let the group know a bit about your design experience and interests. There is no wrong answer here, we just want to know what you are excited about.

  4. Sign the FPCA. Complete the Fedora Project Contributor Agreement (FPCA) through the Account System. This ensures that your contributions are properly licensed.

  5. Complete a ticket. To join the team, you need to complete one design ticket. See Completing a Ticket for how to find work suited for new contributors, claim a ticket, and work through the design process.

  6. Request team membership. Once your design is approved and the ticket is closed, send a message to the team in the Fedora Design chat requesting an invite to the designteam group. Provide your Fedora Account username so we can add you.

After completing these steps, you are a full member of the Fedora Design Team!

Staying Involved

There is no minimum time commitment required to be part of the team. Contribute when you can, at your own pace. That said, staying connected through the chat and attending meetings when you can will help you find opportunities and build relationships with the team. See Meetings for the schedule, how to join, and where we communicate.
