Fedora AI/ML SIG

Open source AI and ML on Fedora, from packaging to production.

Welcome to the Fedora AI/ML Special Interest Group (SIG) documentation. The Fedora AI/ML SIG is a community of contributors working to make Fedora the best open source platform for artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Vision

The Fedora AI/ML SIG works toward a future where AI is free and open, where anyone can build with AI tools within Fedora and across the wider open source community. Fedora is where we start: the premier open source platform for AI/ML, where you can package, run, and build AI tools using entirely free software, on your own hardware, with a community behind you.

Mission

The Fedora AI/ML SIG improves the state of AI/ML and the associated toolchains in Fedora. We do this by:

  • Packaging open AI/ML libraries so Fedora users have easy access to AI/ML tools, including ROCm, PyTorch, llama-cpp, Ollama, and the HuggingFace ecosystem.

  • Enabling local AI inference so that Fedora users can run large language models and other AI workloads on their own hardware.

  • Improving the desktop AI experience to make Fedora a premiere platform for people who often work with AI tools.

  • Documenting how to use AI tools on Fedora, from getting started guides to advanced GPU tuning and model configuration.

  • Creating AI-assisted workflows that help Fedora contributors work more effectively, such as summarizing activity across upstream and downstream projects, triaging issues and tickets, and staying informed about changes across the ecosystem.

Who this site is for

This documentation serves three audiences:

  • Contributors who want to join the SIG and help, whether through packaging, documentation, skills development, or community building. See the Get Involved page to find your path.

  • Users who want to install and run AI tools on Fedora. Browse the software guides in the sidebar for setup instructions and tuning advice.

  • SIG members who need a central reference for processes, meeting info, and project status.

The AI/ML SIG shares a Matrix channel and works closely with several related groups. All of these SIGs are welcome to use the shared #ai-ml:fedoraproject.org Matrix channel for AI-related discussion in Fedora:

Communication

Meetings

The SIG meets every two weeks in #meeting-2:fedoraproject.org on Matrix. Everyone is welcome to attend.
